3rd Chance Credit Financing: Gabriel gets behind the wheel of a 2023 Mitsubishi RVR SE FWD

When Gabriel started to believe again

Gabriel wasn’t the type to ask for help easily. At 34, he worked full-time in a warehouse in Lévis, earning about $4,200 gross per month, plus overtime when he could get it. From the outside, his situation seemed fine. But on paper, it was a different story.

Two years earlier, he had emerged from a personal bankruptcy following a difficult separation, a few missed payments, and a credit card that had eventually maxed out. His credit score hovered around 525. He also had a small line of credit left to pay off and an old collection balance he thought was settled, but which was still lingering on his record. In the meantime, he had tried elsewhere for a car. Two refusals. One dealer had even told him, rather bluntly, that "it won't happen for a long time."

That was the moment that really discouraged him.

The need had become urgent

His old car was starting to cost more in repairs than it was actually worth. One February morning, it simply wouldn't start in the parking lot before his shift. Gabriel caught a ride with a colleague, but he knew this couldn't go on. He needed a reliable vehicle, without falling into something too luxurious or out of reach.

What he wanted was simple: a recent, economical SUV that was comfortable enough for winter and reassuring enough to get back on the right track.

When he came across the 2023 Mitsubishi RVR SE FWD, it caught his eye immediately. The heated seats grabbed his attention right away, but he also liked the practical features: Apple CarPlay, blind-spot monitoring, alloy wheels, and a higher driving position than a compact car. He could picture himself in it. The vehicle was gray, understated, and discreet—exactly the kind of choice he was comfortable with.

The stress of the application... then the first real relief

At first, Gabriel was almost expecting a third refusal.

When he spoke to the team at Prêt Auto Québec, he was surprised by their tone. Nobody downplayed his situation, but nobody judged him either. They calmly explained that his file fell under their specialized credit program, specifically a 3rd chance credit solution, because of a combination of past bankruptcy, a fragile file, and recent rejections elsewhere.

What he appreciated was that they were straightforward with him. No magic promises. No "guarantees." Just a realistic approach: looking at his income, his job stability, and his current ability to get back into good payment habits.

The paperwork, the wait, then the call

As with any real application, he was asked for simple but important documents: his last two pay stubs, recent bank statements, his driver's license, proof of address, and details about his discharged bankruptcy. Gabriel sent everything that same evening, a bit nervous, feeling like he was putting his entire credibility on the line in one email.

The wait lasted a little over 24 hours. He later said it was "the longest day ever, but at the time, it felt endless."

The call came the following afternoon.

Not a spectacular approval. No miracle. Just a realistic approval.

They offered him financing over 72 months, with a $2,500 down payment, at a 12.99% interest rate. His payments came out to about $318 bi-weekly for the 2023 Mitsubishi RVR, taxes included based on his file structure. It wasn't "cheap," and Gabriel knew it. But it was feasible within his budget. After rent, insurance, phone, and groceries, he still had enough breathing room to manage without getting into trouble again.

The day of the signing

Gabriel arrived more tense than he wanted to show. He double-checked everything. He asked questions about the term, the total cost of borrowing, and the possibility of rebuilding his credit if payments were made correctly and on time. Honestly, it was a good thing. He didn't want to sign anything blindly anymore.

The advisor took the time to go through everything with him, point by point. This is often where the stress truly fades: when the client understands what they are signing, why the rate is what it is, and how this loan can become a step toward reconstruction rather than another burden.

When he finally placed his signature on the documents, Gabriel let out a sigh. He said it himself: this wasn't just a car. It was the first time in a long time that he felt like he was being given a real second... or rather, a third chance.

Handing over the keys

When it was time to take possession of the vehicle, he stood next to the RVR for a few seconds in silence. He looked at the interior, tested Apple CarPlay, and ran his hand over the heated steering wheel—or rather, as he laughingly put it, "everything that was going to make his March mornings less painful." When the keys reached his hand, he had that mixture of relief and pride that one rarely sees in major financial decisions, but which speaks volumes.

Starting fresh, one payment at a time

Today, Gabriel doesn't claim that everything is fixed. He knows that credit is rebuilt slowly. But he has started over on a solid foundation, with a reliable vehicle and a payment he understands. Most importantly, he has stopped defining himself solely by his bankruptcy and past rejections.

That is exactly the spirit of the Prêt Auto Québec specialized credit program: looking at the current situation as a whole, not just the mistakes listed on a file. For some, it starts with an honest first conversation. For others, it begins with a formal application on our /demande page.

If you see yourself a little in Gabriel’s story—a damaged credit report, rejections, or the embarrassment of starting over—don't give up too quickly. There are realistic solutions: not perfect, but human. And sometimes, rebuilding your credit simply starts by turning the key in a vehicle you thought you could never afford.
