Used Dodge Durango in Quebec: A Powerful 7-Passenger SUV to Finance

The Used Dodge Durango in Quebec: Who Is It For, and Why Do I Often Recommend It?

I’ll be honest: the used Dodge Durango isn't the perfect SUV for everyone. But for a family that needs 7 seats, does some towing, wants a real sense of stability on the highway between Quebec City and Montreal, or frequently heads to the cottage in winter, it’s a model I regularly recommend at Prêt Auto Québec.

After over 12 years of financing vehicles for clients all across Quebec—from Laval to Trois-Rivières, including Saguenay, Sherbrooke, and the South Shore—I’ve seen a lot of mid-size and full-size SUVs. The Durango keeps coming up in conversations for a simple reason: it offers more muscle than many competitors without jumping straight into the size of a massive truck.

And yes, I often tell my clients: if you like the idea of a powerful 7-passenger SUV, but you’re also shopping for a used RAM 1500 in Quebec or looking into Dodge RAM Jeep Chrysler financing, the Durango is a very smart middle ground. You keep the space, the towing capacity, and a level of comfort that holds up very well for daily driving.

Regarding Size: 7 Seats, But Not Just “On Paper”

There are SUVs that advertise 7 seats, and then when you look at the 3rd row for real… let’s just say you really have to like the people you seat back there.

The Durango handles this better than many. The second row is generally comfortable, and the third row works very well for kids, teens, or shorter trips with adults. For a family of 3 kids, or parents doing the hockey-soccer-school carpool circuit, it works. For transporting 7 adults every week between Longueuil and Gatineau, I’d suggest keeping your expectations realistic.

What I personally like is the compromise. You aren’t driving a bus. The vehicle remains nimble for an SUV of this size, especially in V6 versions, and it maintains a firmer road feel than many “softer” utility vehicles.

Engines: V6 or HEMI?

This is where it gets real.

On the used market in Quebec, you will mostly see:

  • The 3.6L Pentastar V6
  • The 5.7L HEMI V8
  • More rarely, higher performance versions like the R/T, Citadel, or even SRT depending on the year

My take? For 80% of my clients, the V6 does the job. It develops around 293 to 295 horsepower depending on the year and equipment, and it is sufficient for family use, vacations, and some light to moderate towing.

The HEMI V8 is a different beast. We are talking about roughly 360 horsepower. If you are pulling a travel trailer, a boat, or if you simply prefer a more muscular drive, it’s very enjoyable. However, you have to handle the fuel consumption. And at gas prices in Quebec—which often hover between $1.55 and $1.85 a litre depending on the season and region, sometimes higher in the city—that changes the budget.

I’ll say it bluntly: if you drive 25,000 km per year between Blainville, Montreal, and the office, the HEMI can get expensive. If you drive less, or have a genuine need for towing, then it makes sense.

Price of a Used Dodge Durango in Quebec in 2026

Prices fluctuate based on the year, mileage, trim, maintenance history, and whether the vehicle is sold certified or not. But to give you realistic benchmarks as of today:

  • A 2017-2018 Durango with higher mileage is often seen between $18,000 and $25,000
  • A well-equipped 2019-2021 is often between $26,000 and $38,000
  • A more recent 2022-2024, especially a GT, R/T, or Citadel, can easily range from $39,000 to $55,000 and up

Add to that taxes in Quebec: 5% GST and 9.975% QST. On a $30,000 vehicle, we are talking about roughly $4,493 in taxes. The true financed price rises quickly if you don’t have a down payment.

That is precisely where my role truly begins. Many people look only at the advertised price, but what matters is the final payment and the total cost of credit.

If you want to compare with what is currently available, I always suggest taking a look at our inventory. It helps to see the real differences between years, versions, and mileage.

Let’s Talk Financing: Rates, Monthly Payments, and What Banks Actually Look At

I’m going to bust a myth right now: two clients buying the same used Dodge Durango can have very different payments.

Why? Because the rate isn't just tied to the vehicle. It also depends on:

  • Credit score
  • Employment stability
  • Income
  • Down payment
  • Auto credit history
  • Age and mileage of the vehicle

Right now, in Quebec, for a used vehicle, auto financing rates often fall into these ranges:

  • 6.99% to 9.99% for a solid file
  • 10.99% to 14.99% for average credit or credit rebuilding
  • 15.99% to 24.99% for 2nd chance credit, depending on the risk and the vehicle

I prefer to be transparent about this. The ads that make it seem like everyone will get a rate “starting at 4.99%” on used vehicles are not the reality for most people I meet.

Concrete Monthly Payment Calculation Example

Let’s take a used Durango at $31,995.

With taxes, we arrive at approximately $36,789. If the client puts $2,000 down, the financed amount is about $34,789.

Over 72 months:

  • at 8.99%, the payment is around $625 per month
  • at 12.99%, we are closer to $695 per month
  • at 17.99%, we go up to around $790 per month

These are realistic estimates, not figures pulled out of thin air. And that is exactly why I encourage my clients to test different scenarios in our calculator before even choosing the vehicle.

Another detail few consider: a longer term lowers the monthly payment, yes, but increases the total interest cost. Sometimes, I recommend 72 months rather than 84 months even if the payment is a little higher, simply to avoid paying too much in the end.

An Anecdote I Often See: The Client Wants a Big SUV But Underestimates the Global Budget

I’m thinking of Marc, a client from the Drummondville area. A father of three, stable job, good income, but he had just finished paying off some credit cards. He was looking at a Durango R/T because he wanted something “fun to drive” capable of pulling his small travel trailer.

When we put the numbers together—payment, gas, insurance, winter tires, maintenance—he realized the V8 was going to squeeze his budget more than he thought. I suggested a Durango GT AWD with the V6, newer, with less mileage. Result: a more comfortable payment, slightly lower insurance, and he still had his 7 seats for the family.

He called me back a few months later to tell me it was “the right compromise.” Honestly, that is exactly the kind of decision I love to help my clients make.

Winter in Quebec: Where the Durango Scores Points

We don’t finance a vehicle in Quebec the way we would in Florida. Here, you have to live with storms, snowbanks, slush, icy streets in January, and the thaws in March that create potholes everywhere.

The Durango, especially in the AWD version, handles our conditions very well. With good winter tires—and I remind you that Quebec law mandates winter tires from December 1st to March 15th—it is a reassuring vehicle. The weight, ground clearance, and all-wheel drive help a lot.

But beware: all-wheel drive doesn’t mean a miracle. I repeat this to my clients from Quebec City, Lévis, or Abitibi: a good AWD SUV with worn-out winter tires still brakes poorly. And quality tires for a Durango aren't cheap. For 20-inch tires, a set can easily cost $1,200 to $1,800 including installation, depending on the brand.

Also add registration fees via the SAAQ, insurance, and seasonal maintenance. The complete car budget is more than just the monthly payment.

What to Check Before Buying a Used Durango

Here, I’m speaking as an advisor, but also as a guy who has seen files get complicated over avoidable details.

I always recommend checking:

Maintenance History

A well-maintained Durango can be a very good purchase. A neglected Durango can become expensive. I want to see regular oil changes, transmission maintenance if applicable, brakes, suspension, and the condition of the tires.

Mileage Versus Usage

A vehicle with 140,000 km that has mostly done highway driving can be more reassuring than a 95,000 km vehicle that spent its life doing stop-and-go urban driving in Montreal.

Prior Towing

If the vehicle has frequently towed heavy loads, you need to be even more careful. It isn't automatically a bad purchase, but you must inspect it seriously.

Rust and Underbody

In Quebec, with the salt, it’s inevitable. I always look at the underside of the vehicle, the lines, the suspension components, and the general condition of the chassis.

My Simple Advice

If you are torn between “great look, big rims, but fuzzy history” and “slightly more sober version, but impeccable maintenance,” take the second one. Always.

Financing With Bad Credit: Yes, It’s Possible, But Not Just Any Way

A large part of my files at Prêt Auto Québec involves 2nd or 3rd chance credit. Separation, past bankruptcy, consumer proposal, late payments, job loss, return to work—I see it every week.

And yes, a used Dodge Durango can sometimes be financed even with a more difficult file, but the arrangement has to be logical. The vehicle must be in line with income, history, and lender criteria.

I’m thinking of Karine, from the North Shore. After a separation, her score had dropped, but she had found a stable job and needed 7 seats for her kids. She thought nobody would finance an SUV of that size. We restructured the file, chose a more realistic version budget-wise, and obtained approval in less than 24 hours.

That is the work of a good team. Not just “sending an application everywhere,” but choosing the right lenders, at the right time, with the right vehicle. If you are in this situation, our 2nd chance credit page explains well how we work.

Dodge Durango or Something Else?

I’ll give you my opinion straight up.

Choose the Durango if:

  • You want a real 7-passenger vehicle
  • You like a more solid and powerful ride
  • You have a need for towing
  • You like the Dodge/Jeep/RAM/Chrysler universe

Look elsewhere if:

  • Your absolute priority is fuel economy
  • You do a massive amount of city driving
  • You are looking for the lowest possible maintenance cost
  • The 3rd row will be used constantly by adults

I often place it in the same conversation as certain mid-size 7-passenger SUVs, but also with people debating between an SUV and a small truck auto loan because they need capacity without wanting to drive a pickup every day.

A Word From Our Expert

My pro tip: before requesting financing, have your complete car budget calculated with a safety margin of $150 to $250 per month above the monthly payment.

Why? Because a Durango isn’t just the loan. There is gas, winter tires, maintenance, sometimes a remote starter, brakes that are more expensive than a compact car, and unforeseen events. The client who only thinks “I can manage $680 a month” without looking at the rest often ends up stretched thin after six months.

I prefer to approve a slightly less flashy vehicle that my client can keep for a long time without financial stress.

Approval Timelines and How It Works With Us

At Prêt Auto Québec, most applications receive an initial response quickly, often the same day, and in many cases in less than 30 to 60 minutes when the file is complete. Obviously, if we are dealing with a more complex file—self-employed, credit rebuilding, variable income—it might require a few more verifications.

The typical amount financed for a used Durango is often between $20,000 and $45,000, depending on the year and the client’s situation. A down payment helps, but it is not always mandatory. Sometimes, even $1,000 to $2,500 can improve the file or reduce the payment enough to make a difference.

If you are ready to shop seriously, I advise you to start with an application. It is simpler to know in advance what your budget range is than to fall in love with a vehicle before you have the numbers.

The used Dodge Durango, when chosen well and financed well, can be an excellent family SUV in Quebec. Powerful, spacious, reassuring in winter, capable of towing, and frankly pleasant to drive for its category.
